Where to eFoil in Ibiza: the spots that actually work
Most people book an eFoil session in Ibiza without asking where it happens. That is the
question that decides whether you spend the hour flying or the hour falling.
An eFoil does not need waves. What it needs is flat water and no crowd — the board sits
on a mast roughly 70cm below your feet, and both chop and swimmers are a problem. Ibiza has
plenty of water that fits and a fair amount that does not.
Here is where we actually take people, and when.
The morning glass: Talamanca and Botafoc
Talamanca bay is the most reliable beginner water on the island. It faces roughly
north-east, it is sheltered from the prevailing summer wind, and the bottom shelves gently
so a fall costs you nothing. Before about 11am it is usually glass.
The trade-off is traffic. Talamanca sits next to Marina Botafoc, so once the day boats
start moving you inherit their wake. Ride it early or ride it elsewhere.
The afternoon answer: the west coast coves
Once the embat — the thermal sea breeze that builds most summer afternoons — fills in from
the south-west, the east side gets ruffled and the sheltered western coves come into their
own.
Cala Comte and Cala Bassa both hold flat water in the lee of their headlands well into
the afternoon. The water clarity on that side of the island is the reason half the photos
you have seen of Ibiza were taken there. You are riding over sand and seagrass in maybe
three metres of water, and you can see all of it.
Both get busy with swimmers in August, which is why we ride the outer edges rather than the
bays themselves.
Golden hour: Es Vedrà side
The stretch of water looking out at Es Vedrà is the one people remember. The light goes
orange around an hour before sunset, the day boats have gone home, and the water usually
lies down with them.
It is not a beginner spot — it is more exposed and there is less to fall back on — but for a
second or third session it is the best hour of the day in Ibiza, and it is not close. We go into
the timing properly in sunset eFoil sessions.
Formentera, if you have the time
If you are already on a boat, the sandbanks between Ibiza and Formentera around
S'Espalmador are the flattest, clearest water in the Balearics. Waist-deep, turquoise, and
almost no chop.
This is a delivery job rather than a beach session — see Ibiza vs Formentera
for how the two islands actually compare. It is
also the single best place on either island to learn, because falling into 80cm of warm
sand-bottomed water removes the last of the nerves.
The two spots people ask for that we usually talk them out of
Playa d'en Bossa. It is long, sandy and famous, and it is exposed to exactly the wind that
builds every afternoon. Before 10am it can be lovely. By 2pm it is washing-machine chop and
you will spend the session climbing back on.
San Antonio bay in the evening. Beautiful sunset, correct instinct, wrong water. The
boat traffic in and out of San An through the evening makes the whole bay lumpy, and the
sunset-cruise wake arrives in sets.
What actually decides the spot
On the day, we look at three things:
- Wind direction and strength. Under about 12 knots almost anywhere works. Over that,
we go looking for a lee shore.
- Boat traffic. Wake is worse than wind for a first-timer, and it is worst between
11am and 5pm near any marina.
- Your session number. First-timers get shallow, sheltered and boring on purpose.
Boring is where you learn fastest.
Do I get to choose the location?
You can ask, and we will do it if the conditions are safe. But the honest answer is that
the instructor picking the spot on the morning is worth more to your session than any
preference — a beautiful location in the wrong wind is a bad hour on the water.
What is the best time of day to eFoil in Ibiza?
Early morning for flat water and empty bays, or the last two hours before sunset for the
light. The middle of the day in July and August is the worst combination of wind, wake and
swimmers.
Can I eFoil in Ibiza if I have never done any watersport?
Yes. Most people are riding inside about 20 minutes. eFoiling has less in common with
surfing than it looks — there is no paddling, no wave to catch and no timing. You stand up
and manage a throttle.
Is the water warm enough?
From June to October, comfortably. August water sits around 26°C. We provide a wetsuit
anyway, mostly for the impact protection rather than the temperature.
