Can you eFoil with no experience? Who can ride, honestly

2026-08-26 · 3 min read

Short answer: yes, and almost everyone does. But "almost everyone" is not everyone, and it

is worth knowing which side of that line you are on before you pay.

This is about who can ride. If you want the minute-by-minute of the session itself, that

is in your first eFoil lesson.

The actual requirements

Swimming. You must be comfortable in deep water and able to swim. You wear a buoyancy

vest throughout and the instructor is beside you, but you will end up in the water

repeatedly and being relaxed about that is the single biggest predictor of a good session.

Age. 16 alone. From 12 with a parent present.

Weight. This matters more than age, in both directions. Under roughly 40kg and you

struggle to hold the board down — light riders pop the foil out of the water and stall.

Over about 110kg and the board needs more speed to lift, which makes the learning curve

steeper. Neither is a hard stop, but tell us in advance so we bring the right board.

Fitness. Far less than people assume. You are standing, not paddling. The only thing

that tires is the forearm holding the throttle, and that is why nobody rides a full hour

continuously.

Who picks it up fastest

In rough order:

  1. Snowboarders and wakeboarders. The lean-to-steer instinct is already built in, and

they are used to a board doing something underneath them.

  1. Anyone who skateboards or does watersports generally. Balance transfers.
  2. Complete beginners with no preconceptions. This group does better than people expect,

because they listen to the instruction rather than applying a different sport's habits.

  1. Surfers. Genuinely, often slowest at first. The instinct to pop up fast and get

forward on the board works against you — an eFoil wants weight back and patience.

Being unathletic is not on this list. Being unable to relax is.

What actually goes wrong

Nearly every early failure is the same two mistakes:

ready, you fall. The fix is boring: less power for longer.

childish. The kneeling stage is where you learn the throttle.

Both are solved by doing what you are told for the first ten minutes.

time with zero frustration, book a jet ski. An eFoil hour includes falling over.

is worth knowing before a lunchtime booking.

Pregnancy, medical and mobility

Speak to us first rather than booking online. We have taken out riders with a wide range of

physical circumstances and it often works fine, but the honest answer depends on specifics

and we would rather have that conversation before you have paid.

How long does it take to learn to eFoil?

Most people get their first flight within about 20 minutes, and are riding in stretches by

40 minutes. A second session is where it starts feeling like control rather than luck.

Do I need to be fit to eFoil?

No. Standing balance and being relaxed matter far more than strength or cardio. The forearm

holding the throttle is the only thing that reliably tires.

Can children eFoil in Ibiza?

From 12 with a parent present, and weight matters more than age — under about 40kg is hard.

For younger children a Seabob is genuinely the better booking.

What if I am scared of falling?

Everyone falls, including people who have ridden for years. You fall into deep warm water

wearing a buoyancy vest, at low speed, having been shown how to fall flat and away from the

board. It is the least frightening part of the session once it has happened once.
